Scientific endeavour is a process of knowledge building that allows for the development of new technologies and solving of practical problems for collective and individual benefit. Science has and will continue to improve the lives of people.
“Science and Society” - the theme of this year’s Singapore International Science Challenge cum International Students’ Science Fair draws the attention of participants to what they need to think of and about their roles as budding scientists. As they involve themselves in science research, they must contend with the impact of science on society, including the attendant positive and negative externalities.
Throughout the 5-day event, participants will have many opportunities to engage in civic discourse on their research as well as have robust conversations on the wider implications of scientific research. They will also experience a culturally diverse Singapore which I hope will add a different perspective to their understanding of science and society.
I wish all participants a fruitful and enlightening experience.
